SME Webinar – Integration of Company Culture and the Role of Engineering of Record | Date: Thursday,
Date: Thursday, January 21, 2021 10-11am EST
The use of an Engineer of Record (EoR) for a tailings storage facility (TSF) has become widely accepted, even an industry best practice. EoR qualifications often include more than 15 years of industry experience and specialization in TSF design, construction, operation, maintenance and closure. For a specific tailing storage facility to be successful the Consulting company culture, the Owner culture and the role of the EoR must be integrated and aligned. This webinar will explore the intersection of Consulting company culture and Owner culture with the role of the EoR that is required to continually improve the performance of TSF throughout the mine’s life-cycle.
About the speaker:
Patrick Corser, Stantec Senior Vice President, has more than 30 years of engineering and construction experience working on mining, civil, geotechnical, and environmental projects. He has managed mine development, tailings and closure projects for numerous mines in North and South America and throughout Europe. His technical expertise encompasses both design and construction of containment systems for mine waste disposal, tailing and waste rock facilities.

ESRS WEBINAR - CELEBRATION OF JAN BOON'S LIFE & SOCIAL RISK WORK
Date: Thursday, February 11, 2021 12-130 EST
After his retirement as a civil servant with Natural Resources Canada, Jan Boon embarked on the quest to understand and contribute for more positive impacts of mining. This took him back to graduate school (he was already a PhD).
During the last ten years, Jan visited many mining projects all over the world, specifically Latin America. He was able to identify the different stages of a mining project to engage and obtain social acceptance.
His enthusiasm had him present in all the most important mining events in Canada. His intellectual curiosity and desire for better outcomes for mining is reflected in the different research papers, articles and book he published.
In July 2020, we were saddened by the passing of Jan, as he was a long-term member of ESRS, a dedicated scholar, and an educator of our next generation of professionals. Jan is remembered especially as an active proponent for change, always sharing his expertise, via presentations and facilitating workshops in different parts of the world. Read on for more of his life and career transitions.
In remembrance and celebration of Jan’s life and work, some of his most significant findings will be presented by Robert Boutilier, followed by a panel who knew Jan well, including Bernarda Elizalde, Dominic Channer, and Luc Zandvliet. Andres Recalde will moderate the session.
We hope you’ll join us!

This year’s workshop series consists of a free introductory webinar discussing why relationships and early engagement are important.
To register for this free webinar, please visit: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/developing-relationships-in-tailings-management-tickets-136535799251
This event will be followed by a 3-part webinar series where we provide a framework on how to build relationships, how to engage meaningfully and how to incorporate western science with traditional knowledge. We will be facilitating a two-way conversation between community and industry partners, presenting case examples as well as a panel discussion on how to build meaningful relationships with communities that facilitates the social license to operate a tailings facility. Registration for the 3-part series is pending.

As part of the Global Action on Tailings initiative, SME has a large collaborative working on a tailings handbook, to be published later this year. They are looking for short vignettes (500-1000 words) describing case studies involving different aspects of tailings processing, design, management, innovation, transformations, closure, alternate land use, etc. If you have something you could potentially share, please contact us at esrs@cim.org so we can make the right connections with the working group. Submissions are due March 1.
