Mandate

The CIM UMS Education Committee’s mandate is to support the transfer of knowledge to both our membership and the public on topics related to underground mining. The Education committee will also collate relevant information that encourages interaction between our Societies and members (eg. historical mines database) and will make this available to the entire CIM community. The Education Committee is intended as a technical resource and not as a financial resource for programs/ exhibits/ displays/ etc.

Membership

Committee Chair: Donna Beneteau

The Chair of the CIM UMS Education Committee will be a UMS Board member. Other participants may be from the BOD or CIM National members.

Strategic Goals

The goals of the Education Committee are as follows:

  • Answering simple questions posed to CIM related to underground mining.
Make inquiries into types of technical conferences of value to membership in smaller communities or as add-ons to CIM Convention (rock mechanics, ventilation, etc.)
Sharing and publicizing new courses, workshops, seminars across the country which may be of relevance to UMS and its members
Providing support and direction for members seeking education in specific subjects of relevance to UMS.
Developing or facilitating access to technical content other than CIM National’s paper repository for remote access as related to underground mining (webinars, videos, audio recordings, mines database, mining methods, etc.)
If gaps in technical knowledge are identified, short courses and speakers could be sought out to be added to Convention.
Education Committee support will be available to the CIM Canadian Mining Schools. Initially the committee will report back to the UMS BOD on the success of the different mining programs in recruiting faculty and students.
With the help of membership, the Committee will create a directory of museums, and other similar institutions, with displays and exhibits about mining in Canada.

Annual Objective (2021/22)

  • Have mines database hosted on CIM website, and continue to update it as new information is provided by others
  • Host a minimum of 6 virtual monthly webinars
  • Continue to create documentation on mining methods
