Virtual Series - Mineral Processing

Date: Tuesday, February 9, 2021 - 7:00pm-9:30pm

This virtual forum bring together a panel of experts for a discussion on current priorities and important topics within mineral processing, as well as experts to provide knowledge sharing presentations. The workshop portion of the forum will allow participants to provide their input on current GMG initiatives for this topic.

The GMG Mineral Processing working group has several newly launched projects within this field, including initiatives to develop guidance for metal accounting, process control, geometallurgy, overall equipment effectiveness, as well as guideline review projects and many more soon to be launched projects.

WEBINAR - CELEBRATION OF JAN BOON'S LIFE & SOCIAL RISK WORK

Date: Thursday, February 11, 2021 - 12:00pm-1:30pm EST

After his retirement as a civil servant with Natural Resources Canada, Jan Boon embarked a the quest to understand and contribute for more positive impacts of mining. This took him back to graduate school (he was already a PhD).

During ten years, Jan visited many mining projects all over the world, specifically Latin America. He was able to identify the different stages of a mining project to engage and obtain social acceptance.

His enthusiasm made him present in all the most important mining events in Canada. His intellectual curiosity and desire for better outcomes for mining is reflected in the different research papers, articles and book he published.

In July 2020, we were saddened by the passing of Jan, as he was a long-term member of ESRS, a dedicated scholar, and an educator of our next generation of professionals. Jan is remembered especially as an active proponent for change, always sharing his expertise, via presentations and facilitating workshops in different parts of the world. Read on for more of his life and career transitions.

In remembrance and celebration of Jan’s life and work, some of his most significant findings will be presented by Robert Boutilier, followed by a panel who knew Jan well, including Bernarda Elizalde, Dominic Channer, and Luc Zandvliet. Andres Recalde will moderate the session.

We hope you’ll join us!

Why Relationships are Important

Date: Thursday, February 18, 2021

The 2020 tailings webinar series brought up the importance of people and relationships in effective tailings management.  The Tailings Management Working Group and the Indigenous Relations Committee are collaborating on this important topic for the 2021 tailings management workshop.  This year’s workshop consists of a free introductory webinar discussing why relationships and early engagement are important.  This is followed by a 3 webinar series where we provide a framework on how to build relationships, how to engage meaningfully and how to incorporate western science with traditional knowledge.  We will be facilitating a two way conversation between community and industry partners, presenting case examples as well as a panel discussion on how to build meaningful relationships with communities that facilitates the social license to operate a tailings facility.

Webinar – Lac La Ronge Dam – Potential Dam Failure

Date: Thursday, February 26, 2021

Lac La Ronge Dam is used to control water levels on Lac la Ronge.  The major components of the dam consist of a four bay concrete control structure, a fishway channel, and a 3.3m high rockfill dam with a relatively impervious core.  During a routine inspection of Lac La Ronge Dam in June 2017, depressions and cracking were identified on the embarkment crest.  During the following investigations, a cloudy discharge was observed downstream, indicating material movement out of the embankment core.  Temporary repairs were completed to reduce flow through the embankment and reduce the potential for piping.  Permanent remediation was planned and initiated in June 2020.

In June 2020, reservoir levels were rapidly increasing due to wet conditions on the basin and it was expected that the core of the dam would be overtopped, increasing the risk of internal erosion.  Increased monitoring and additional mitigation measures including a crest raise were put in place to verify the condition and ensure containment of the reservoir.  The execution of the crest raise is complicated by the remote site and the lack of sufficient space at the site to accommodate permanent rehabilitation and the crest raise.  The risk to the dam imposed by the high reservoir was determined to be more urgent resulting in the delay of the permanent remediation project until 2021.

Through July, the reservoir continued to rise resulting in a lack of adequate minimum freeboard.  WSA then elevated the emergency classification from hazardous condition to potential dam failure.  This resulted in daily on-site monitoring, satellite camera reviews, and additional mitigation measures.  WSA also changed organized structures for this response to an ICS structure and established an ICP in Moose Jaw and Regina internally.  In late September 2020, the elevation of Lac La Ronge at the dam site was declining along with the upstream tributaries.  As a result, a step down of the emergency classification was developed to include fewer onsite inspections supplemented by removed data collection.

The potential dam failure classification was officially removed in November 2020.

Webinar – Update on the Mine Closure and Reclamation ISO Standard Development

Date: Thursday, March 4th, 2021 @ 12:00-1:30pm EST

The Environmental, Climate Change, Mine Closure and Genomics Working Group has the mission to disseminate knowledge to our ESRS members to adapt mining practices to a changing world. Potential issues and topics of relevance to mine closure and reclamation are numerous and requires the involvement of multi-disciplinary teams. This webinar will present an update on the development of Mine Closure and Reclamation ISO standard. The application of standards, guidelines and complementary documents will prevent and mitigate long-term mining impacts and create environmental and socio-economic value through the mine closure and reclamation management process.

Speaker: Michael Nahir is a civil and environmental engineer with 27 years of experience in the management, design, and execution of mine site remediation projects in Canada. Michael recently joined Parsons as the Director of Mine Closure and Reclamation and is responsible for developing and overseeing the mine closure program for Parsons. Previously he worked for the Canadian federal government as their Director of the Project Technical Office, which provided technical oversight to $2.8 billion of mine remediation projects. He also served as Senior Project Manager of the Giant Mine Remediation project with a staff of engineers and scientists with a yearly budget of approximately $80 million and a project value of over $980 million. This work included closure planning and the conduct of various remediation projects. Before that he was the design manager for the Faro Mine closure and reclamation plan.  In addition, he is also serving as the International Standards Organization (ISO) international project manager for the development of the ISO Mine Closure and Reclamation Planning standard.

Webinar Series - How to Build Meaningful Relationships in Tailings Management

Dates: March 23-25, 2021

This 3-part webinar series brings together indigenous and industry leaders to share how they built their relationships with each other, the challenges they encountered and the value of their relationships in making mine developments work.  We will be discussing the following topics:

March 23 – The importance of early engagement and building trust.  Our speakers will discuss how to build trust and how this trust is a critical element for solving problems that inevitably develop over the mine’s life.

March 24 – Traditional knowledge is a mandated element in environmental and social impact assessments.  In this session we take a closer look at how traditional knowledge and western science can be better integrated together into a more comprehensive understanding of a place and how this understanding can be used in the tailings, and mine, design process.

March 25 – ESG (environment, social, governance) is a topic being discussed with increasing frequency amongst investors.  In this final session, we will look at how relationships between First Nations/indigenous communities and industry fit within the broader context of ESG and the investor community.
